Ryo Honda InterviewTokyocube: When did you start drawing?
Ryo Honda: I've been drawing since when I was about 3, and that's pretty much all I've wanted to do since. I didn't really study much on other subjects even at elementary school. So my study desk in my room was used purely for drawing. My mum would sometimes get mad at me, because the desk was quite expensive and she wanted me to study at it, even just a little bit :)
Tokyocube: Why did you choose to illustrate professionally?
Ryo Honda: Actually there wasn't any big reason behind it, other than that I always wanted to draw during my life and I love drawing and creating things that inspire other people. Maybe I haven't changed since I was a kid doodling on my textbook in class. I love drawing, and now I am doing it as my work which is great for me.
Tokyocube: Could you tell us which artists are inspirations to you?
Ryo Honda: One of my first favourite artists actually was called Ryo Honda! lol. I'm not joking, there really is an artist called Ryo Honda in Japan, who works as an environmental illustrator.
I knew him when I was about eight and knew there was a job called illustrator by knowing him. Other artists that have had a large influence on my drawings: Dave McKean, Mo Williams, Yoshimoto Nara, Yoko Yamamoto, Mika Ninagawa.
Tokyocube: We particularly love your Dropman character! Where did the inspiration come from?
Ryo Honda: Dropman originated from my doodling when I was back in Japan in 2006. At that time I wanted to draw something pure but without any facial expression. So when people see the character they all get different impression. Then I started to develop this character to make it better and stronger because sometimes "purity" in a character design can give a slightly weak impression to people.
Tokyocube: Could you tell us what your plans are for the future?
Ryo Honda:I always feel great when I try new things, and at the moment that's exactly what I'm doing. I would really like to create a Dropman figure and picture books, so people get to know more about him.
I am interested in creating animations of my characters, perhaps as a short-movie. But I am certainly sure that I will keep drawing and exploring new characters for my work. I also look forward to introducing my products on your the Tokyocube website, for people to enjoy my characters!

Tokyocube:いつから絵を描き始めたのですか。
Ryo Honda:物心のつく3歳くらいの頃から絵は描いておりました。それからと言うもの、絵が私のやりたい事になりました。私は中学校に入学しても、絵以外の教科ではあまり勉強する気になりませんでした、ですから当時の私の部屋にあった勉強机は、ただ絵を描くためだけに使用していました。ですので私の母もたまに怒ってました。結構高くていい机でしたし、少しでも勉強の為に使用してもらいたかったみたいです。:-)
Tokyocube:なぜプロのイラストレーターになろうと思ったのですか。
Ryo Honda:実は特に大きな理由があるわけではありませんが、絵を描いて生きて行きたいと思っていましたし、純粋に絵を描く事が好きです。私の絵を見てくれる誰かが少しでもインスピレーションを受けてくれるような、そんな作品を作って行きたいと思っています。
私は、授業中教科書に落書きをしていたあの頃から、ちっとも変わっていないのだと思います。絵を描くのが好き、そして今それを仕事としている、それは私にとって素晴らしい事です。
Tokyocube:影響を受けたアーティストを教えて頂けますか。
Ryo Honda:私が最初に知った（影響を受けた）アーティストの名前は実は私と同じ名前のRyo Hondaさんです。冗談ではないですよ（笑）。本当に本田さんというイラストレーターが日本にいらっしゃるんです。彼は環境漫画家として絵を描いてらっしゃいます。彼を知ったのは私が8歳の時でした。そして彼を知る事によって、イラストレーターという仕事を知る事が出来ました。
私が他に影響を受けたアーティストは、Dave McKean、Mo Williams、奈良美智、山本容子、蜷川実花 などなど。
Tokyocube:私たちは特にドロップマンというキャラクターが気に入っているんですが、このキャラクターはどのようにして生まれたのでしょう。
Ryo Honda:ドロップマンは私が2006年の秋、日本に帰国した時に、スケッチブックの落書きの中から生まれました。その時私は、見た感じピュアなんだけれども、表情が全くないキャラクターを作りたかったのです。そうすれば人がそのキャラクターを見た時、皆それぞれ違った印象を受ける事ができます。その後このドロップマンをさらに個性の強いキャラクターにするよう、何枚も絵を描きました。なぜならピュアリティというのは、時に弱い印象を齎しますからね。
Tokyocube:今後の予定等をお聞かせください。
Ryo Honda:新しいことに挑戦することが私にとっては一番の刺激になります。そして今まさにそれをしております。ドロップマンのフィギュア化や、絵本制作などは近いうちに作ってみたいですし、早く皆さんに私の作品を知ってもらえれば、と願ってます。
私のキャラクターのアニメーションや、ショートムービー等も将来的にはデザインしてみたいですね。それと同時に絵を描き続け、新しいキャラクターを常に作り続けたいと考えています。
